2022 Kansas stats - 6.46 ERA in 78 innings

2-27-23 - Opening Weekend -

Ryan Vanderhei, RHP, TCU– Although a fourth-year college player, the Kansas transfer has been a revelation in just seven months at his new college home. Vanderhei was the talk of the fall with an electric arm and terrific stuff. He was anywhere from 95-99 mph with his fastball early in the fall before settling in more in the 92-96 mph range. At the Showdown the 6-foot-6, 190 pound right-hander topped 97 with his heater, sitting 94-95 and maintaining 92-94 into the fourth inning. He lands open, creating arm side action for plus life on his fastball. His improved changeup was mostly plus and he used it in big situations to get soft contact for outs. His 84-88 mph slider was also a factor, showing average consistently, while flashing plus. With a mix of stuff, performance and projection, Vanderhei, like Hollan, easily projects to early Day Two. And regardless of his age, late Day One is not out of reach with continued good health and performance.

1-19-23 - Top 25 Breakdown: No. 15 TCU

Top Newcomer: RHP Ryan Vanderhei. The Kansas transfer righthander is expected to take a big step forward this spring. Vanderhei has always had huge potential, but he did finish last season with a 6.45 ERA along with 83 strikeouts and 43 walks. He needs to be more consistent, and one thing Kirk Saarloos worked with him on this past fall was relying a bit more on his changeup. That, combined with a fastball up to 97-98 mph, could pay huge dividends for the Frogs this spring. He’s rising up the charts, and that will only continue if he shines over the next few months.

12-12-22 - 2022 Fall Report: TCU

Kansas transfer and junior righthanded pitcher Ryan Vanderhei will give the Frogs another huge arm in the weekend rotation. Vanderhei, a 6-foot-6, 185-pounder, had a 2.70 ERA in 20 appearances as a reliever for the Jayhawks two seasons ago, but his numbers took a step back last season with a 6.46 ERA in 78 innings. Looking to reinvent himself with the Frogs, Vanderhei was the talk of the fall with an electric arm and terrific stuff. He was anywhere from 95-99 mph with his fastball in the first couple of innings before settling in anywhere from 92-96 mph with the heater, along with a changeup and slider. Saarloos said Vanderhei had a tendency in the past to kind of use the slider as a ‘pacifier’ so to speak. However, the focus of the fall was making him more confident in the four-seam fastball and the changeup.
