Jared Dickey

Tennessee

A part-time player in 2022, Dickey is a converted catcher with a big, strong body and a professional approach at the plate. He's got legitimately huge raw power and an up-the-middle approach that has helped him stay away from cold streaks. Dickey is a future middle-of-the-order slugger who draws a significant amount of walks and could potentially run into 30+ homer campaigns as a professional. He's best suited for a corner outfield spot or first base where his fringy speed and fringy glove fit best. That said, Dickey's above average arm will play anywhere.

1-31-23 - An Early Look at the Twins 2023 Draft

#113 - Jared Dickey is the 113th ranked prospect. A few things pop out immediately: He’s listed as an outfielder/catcher. The Twins desperately need to add catching prospects. He walks more than he strikes out. And he’s from Tennessee, a tough SEC school from which the Twins have plucked from three times since 2020 (Jorel Ortega, Jake Rucker and Alerick Soulaire).

Junior right-handed pitcher Chase Dollander is the Vols' most touted prospect on this year's team and was ranked No. 2 overall on the list. New Tennessee shortstop Maui Ahuna came in at No. 17 after transferring from Kansas in June, while utility man Jared Dickey rounded out the potential day one picks for the Vols at No. 23, respectively. Junior outfielder Kyle Booker was the fourth Vol on the list at No. 80.

Dickey also enjoyed a breakout season this past spring as a redshirt-freshman. Despite battling a foot injury, the utility man hit .380 over 25 starts in 40 games. Dickey hit seven home runs, drove in 19 runs and walked 20 times while catching and playing outfielder for the Vols. He also served as the designated hitter and as a pinch-hitter while fighting through his injury.

32. Jared Dickey, C/OF, Tennessee – An outfielder with Tennessee, the plan is for him to be the catcher this coming season. His range in the outfield will be a concern, but he has the arm of a catcher so it can absolutely play in right. He has only seen action behind the plate in 8 games thus far in college, so the jury is still very much out on that front.

As seems to be the case with players from Tennessee of late, his calling card is the power as he has plus potential there and has a good approach at the plate. Given the position transition and the fact he was a utility player with sporadic playing time a season ago, Dickey has a lot riding on his production this season.
