21. Tommy Troy

Shortstop, Stanford

A very well regarded prep bat, Troy built off a strong freshman campaign at Stanford with an arguably stronger summer at Wareham. With notable power for his size, Troy has shown himself capable of going out to all fields, and finds a ton of barrels. Strong eyes and quick twitch gives him the ability to make good swing decisions consistently, and it is rare to see him post poor at-bats. Troy typically takes the field at second base, though he’s played a ton of reps at shortstop too. He has a strong arm for the infield with soft hands, smooth actions and good transitions around the bag. He'll likely be tested at shortstop for the Cardinal moving forward, but this is a definitive middle infield profile.

22. Seattle Mariners: Tommy Troy, IF, Stanford

Troy has had a lot of success on the Cape and is defensively versatile. The offensive ability really started to show up as a Sophomore and could be the driving force for going higher than this in July.

27. Philadelphia Phillies: Tommy Troy, IF/OF, Stanford

Troy can play anywhere at a high rate. No one tool stands out for him, which could affect his draft stock, but if you stand back and just watch him, it’s not the lack of tools that should be focused on, it should be how he does everything right. He’s mature at the plate. He comes up with the big hit when you need. He rarely makes mistakes in the field. He’s a mix of Tommy Edman, Darin Erstad and Mark Kotsay rolled into one. While for some front offices that’s a boring pick, but the way I look at it, it’s a safe pick with high upside. You could put this guy in any lineup in any spot and he’ll find a way to succeed.

21. St. Louis Cardinals

Tommy Troy, IF/OF, Stanford

After a big 2022 campaign with the Cardinal, Troy turned into a different animal this past summer on the Cape, crushing baseball and showcasing his raw power. He’s an extremely versatile player who can play anywhere on the diamond. His tools are mostly average across the board; a sum of his parts type of guy. This is the type of player the Cardinals have maximized in recent years.

The only question is where Tommy Troy will play in the infield. Against San Jose State last week he was the starting shortstop, but Esquer has hinted he could play second or third just as easily, Troy was named the top prospect at the prestigious Cape Cod League last summer and the staff loves his explosiveness.

16. Tommy Troy, SS/2B, Stanford – Troy is a guy who will get the opportunity to prove he can hold down shortstop this Spring, although there are some doubts about his ability to stay there long term and I expect him to move back to second base in the future. While he is under six feet tall and weighs in at just 180 lbs., there is average to better power for a middle infielder in the bat, which finds barrels regularly. Troy is a guy who is unassuming as a player, but should continue to be a reliable contributor who can provide quality defense at second and near the top of an order.

21. St. Louis Cardinals | Tommy Troy, SS/2B, Stanford

St. Louis is in an interesting spot here and can lean several directions, but Troy still remains after his loud showing at the Cape. It’s a twitchy, well-rounded tool set capable of sticking up the middle long term with great actions and hands. His athleticism shows in the box. Troy shows plus bat speed and lighting hands with some loud pull-side power when squared. If he continues his summer dominance at the plate to the spring, Troy has a big foundation to build upon. -IB

10. Tommy Troy, SS, Stanford

Scouts voted Troy the top prospect in the Cape Cod League after he hit .310/.386/.531 with wood bats, nearly matching his metal-bat numbers during the spring. He's a hit-over-power guy with good pitch-recognition skills, average range and similar arm strength, though he may profile better at second base than shortstop as a pro.
