UPDATED RESEARCH - 2023 Draft Prospect - SS - Kevin McGonigle

Kevin McGonigle

SS              Monsignor Bonner

3-3-23 - Keith Law’s MLB Draft 2023 Rankings: -

#30 Kevin McGonigle, SS, Monsignor Bonner High (Drexel Hill, Pa.)

McGonigle is an Auburn commit who plays in the same prep school league outside of Philadelphia that produced Nolan Jones, Mike Siani, and 2021 draft pick Lonnie White. He’s a left-handed hitter who’s hit over power and also gets over his front side very early, like Shaw, hitting very well over the summer at showcases, which is critical for someone who’ll see very little quality pitching this spring. He’s a shortstop now but likely to end up at second base.

17. Kevin McGonigle

Shortstop, Monsignor Bonner

McGonigle is a smaller, twitchy infielder with lightning for hands and impressive core strength at the plate. He's hit absolutely everywhere he's gone. It's a compact, strong, sometimes rotational cut that creates big pound-for-pound pull-side power, though McGonigle is in no rush to sellout for the juice. He'll ambush pitches over the right field fence, but it's not necessarily his game. This is an advanced hitter. McGonigle has a loose, flashy glove with bouncy actions on the dirt. He possesses an average arm and his feet can get short and choppy on balls his to his left and right. Some believe the profile is best suited as an impact second baseman, though proponents point to his athleticism, lateral burst and sparky actions as reasons to let him develop as a SS.

7. Kevin McGonigle, Monsignor Bonner (Drexel Hill, Pa.), IF

The Class of 2022 was loaded with shortstops, including Holliday who went No. 1 overall. McGonigle is the top high school middle infielder in 2023 and could go somewhere in the second half of the first round. A consistent bat with some power, McGonigle could be a strong candidate to switch to second base.

1-1-23 - Perfect Game California @California_PG

#5 in the country, Kevin McGonigle, Inf out of Monsignor Bonner HS in PA.  Auburn Baseball commit with 5'11/185 lb frame. Advanced hitter with compact swing from the left side w/ all field approach. 6.56 60 at PG National.

12-28-22 - Ian Smith @FlaSmitty

2B/SS Kevin McGonigle has one of the best hit tools in the 2023 prep class w/ premier bat-to-ball skills and an adv. all-fields approach.

The Auburn commit has a Contact% around 80% in one of the largest samples in the country, and even better against plus velocity.  https://t.co/nX4G7n4v1R

7. Kevin McGonigle, SS/2B, Monsignor Bonner HS (PA) – The left-handed hitting middle infielder has some of the quickest hands in the class both in the field and at the plate. He is an average runner and has an average arm, so there is plenty of signs pointing to a future move to second, although his instinctiveness and a frame that could add strength without slowing him down too much could result in him sticking at short. At the plate he has a very advanced approach that is definitely hit first, although there is some weight shift in the swing and his hips fire well, combining that with his incredible bat speed, there could be average to better power in his future.

14. Boston Red Sox: Kevin McGonigle, IF, Monsignor Bonner HS (PA)

McGonigle should stay at second base long term. He works well with whoever is at shortstop and can also be a .300, double-digit homer run guy at the plate too. Think Matt McLain or Ian Kinsler.

Kevin McGonigle

Bonner-Prendergast HS (PA)

The White Sox have found some success in the high school ranks, and McGonigle has done nothing but rake from the left side, and shows no sign of slowing down.

13. Chicago Cubs

Kevin McGonigle, Infield, Monsignor Bonner

The Cubs haven’t shied away from high-end prep prospects. McGonigle has the looks of a stud second baseman at the next level, a guy who has a chance to hit .300 year in and year out. He’s got double-digit homerun potential too. McGonigle may have the longest track record of pure hit-ability in this class going back several years.

9. Colorado Rockies | Kevin McGonigle, SS, Monsignor Bonner HS (Pa.)

The Rockies grab arguably the top prep hit tool in the entire class here at ninth overall. McGonigle is as advanced with the stick as they come, with a direct lefty stick and elite hand-eye coordination with hard barreled contact. It’s possible McGonigle lands himself within the top-10 based upon the plus hit tool, budding power that projects, and capability to stay up the middle. -IB

7. Kevin McGonigle, SS/2B, Monsignor Bonner HS (Pa.)

A member of the USA Baseball 18U team, McGonigle just hits. Everywhere he goes, he shows off a professional approach and extremely impressive bat-to-ball skills, including during PDP League play and the High School All-American Game. He’s a solid left-handed-hitting middle infielder who might end up at second base, where he could take after his favorite player, Chase Utley.

13. Arizona Diamondbacks

Kevin McGonigle, Infield, Monsignor Bonner

The Diamondbacks have been no stranger to high upside preps and selecting in the thirteen slot should provide them some intriguing options. McGonigle arguably has the best present hit tool and polish in the class with a second base future profile. He’s a twitchy kid with remarkable barrel control and the ability to impact the game in every facet.
