UPDATED RESEARCH - 2023 Draft Prospect - RHP - Ty Langenburg
Ty Langenberg

11-23-1-23 - The Scouting Trail: Round Rock Prospect Breakdown -
No. 55 Ty Langenberg, RHP, Iowa– At his best Langenberg repeats his delivery for plus control of three offerings that include a 92-94 (T95) mph sinking fastball, an above average slider and his best pitch, a power sinking changeup at 86-88 mph. However, at Round Rock he displayed little of the above. Sam Houston State found barrel after barrel, knocking Langenberg out of the game after 89 pitches over 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out six. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander pitched at 88-93 with a comfort zone of 90-91, showing good sink at times. His slider graded as below average with his changeup slightly above average. He also flashed a well below average cutter at 88-89. Whereas most of the industry has him in the later rounds of Day Two (or even Day Three based on the Round Rock look), I remain bullish on the Hawkeye right-hander. In the weeks leading up to the 2023 MLB Draft, three-pitch college starters with plus control and a track record of success tend to rise up draft boards, even the ones who weren’t at their best during Week Two of the season. Langenberg is still an early-to-mid Day Two (4th-5th round) prospect on my draft list.

11-15-22 - 2022 Fall Report: Iowa - https://d1baseball.com/fall-report/iowa-2022/
On the player side, the pitcher expected to take the biggest step forward is righthander Ty Langenberg, who served as Iowa’s Sunday starter a year ago going 7-2, 3.71 with 74 strikeouts in 63 innings. Langenberg’s stuff is as good as his results, sitting in the 91-93 mph range with his fastball to set up his best pitch, a sinking mid-80s changeup. He also throws a cutter and a slider, giving him a well-rounded four-pitch mix that helps him turn over a lineup more than once.

4. RHP Ty Langenberg, Iowa.
Bat: R. Throw: R. 6'2", 190 lbs. Born 12/8/2001. Hometown: Urbandale, IA.
2022: 7-2, 3.71 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 74/23 K/BB in 63 innings.
Ty Langenberg was a seldom-used reliever as a freshman in 2021, then took a step forward to become Iowa's Sunday starter in 2022 with solid results. After a strong run through the Cape Cod League (4.13 ERA, 36/6 K/BB in 24 IP), he looks poised to take another step forward of equal magnitude. The top pitching prospect in the conference, Langenberg sits in the low 90's with his fastball and can comfortably run it up to around 95, getting some life on the pitch that hasn't quite found its identity yet. His slider doesn't always have consistent shape, sometimes showing downer action but playing better as a sweeper and flashing above average in the latter shape. Lastly, he rounds his arsenal out with a plus changeup that misses a ton of bats, giving him the best three pitch arsenal in the Big Ten. Iowa is one of the more data-driven programs in the country, so he's in the right place for it all to come together for his junior season. Beyond the stuff, the 6'2" righty shows an athletic, repeatable delivery that helps him control the strike zone, running a solid 8.2% strikeout rate at Iowa last year before dropping to 5.9% on the Cape. In 2023, he'll look to miss more bats with his fastball and establish himself as a true mid-rotation option, as his great run through the Cape came as a reliever that averaged fewer than two innings per appearance.
