UPDATED RESEARCH - 2023 Draft Prospect - 2B/SS - Matt Shaw

Matt Shaw

2B          Maryland

3-3-23 - Keith Law’s MLB Draft 2023 Rankings: -

#29 Matt Shaw, SS, Maryland

Everyone agrees Shaw can hit, and everyone agrees that Shaw isn’t a shortstop — and shouldn’t even be playing there for the Terps, as he has had trouble making routine throws to first. He has to at least move to second base, and could end up in left field. It’s a really unorthodox approach at the plate where he’s over his front side very early, something like Ryan Zimmerman was in college, but it produces hard contact thanks to his strength and plus bat speed.

2-27-23 - 2023 MLB Draft Preview: College players to watch -

Matt Shaw, SS, Maryland - Matt Shaw was the MVP of the Cape Cod League last summer and presents a bunch of interesting tools, as he could be above-average to plus in hitting, power, and speed. The contact ability is real, as are the home run totals he has posted (22 last year). The biggest drawback is that most don’t think he sticks at short longterm, as his arm is probably not good enough and while his defense is sound at short, it isn’t strong enough to make up for the arm. Still he might be my favorite college bat in this draft.

11. Matt Shaw

Shortstop, Maryland

Shaw does a little bit of everything well. He's a thick, twitchy middle-infielder who could certainly stick at shortstop, though some believe he could end up at second base or third base because of his shorter strides and muscular frame. Featuring above average power and a potential solid average hit tool, Shaw has impact in his bat and a mature approach. An above runner, maybe a tick more, he's got the potential to net double digit homers and stolen bases at his peak whilst developing into a Kike Hernandez type pro.

1-19-23 - Top 25 Breakdown: No. 13 Maryland

https://d1baseball.com/season-preview/top-25-breakdown-no-13-maryland/

Star Power: 2B Matt Shaw showed signs of being a star during a freshman season in which he batted .322 with 16 doubles and seven home runs. He then became a bona fide star with his performance as a sophomore last season, and specifically by hitting 22 home runs. His performance in the Cape Cod League over the summer, when he batted .360/.432/.574, all of which led the league, won him league MVP honors and set the hype around his junior season into overdrive, and it’s easy to see why. His hittability is apparent with the batting average he put up on the Cape, he shows easy power from a strong 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame and he also flashes enough speed and know-how on the bases to be a threat to run. Defensively, he plays his position with high energy and makes all the routine plays.

1-1-23 - 2022 Fall Report: Maryland

https://d1baseball.com/fall-report/2022-fall-report-maryland/

No one cherishes competition as much as Matt Shaw.

After hitting .290, 22, 67 in the spring, he tore through the Cape Cod League. Shaw led the league hitting .360, was second in homers (5) and doubles (10), third in hits (49) and stole 21 bases in the regular season, earning Player of the Year honors in the nation’s premier collegiate summer league. He added to those tallies in the CCBL playoffs, culminating with a three-hit performance featuring a double and a two-run homer in a championship game victory. Then despite all the publicity he received and the constant chatter of his soaring draft stock, Shaw arrived back in College Park and went back to work every day like he’s the worst player on the team. There was no let up, boredom or apathy toward the fall, which sometimes happens with top prospects coming off monster summer performances and a long spring season. Shaw just continued to go about his business of attacking baseballs with violence in his mind and his swing. Every contact he makes is hard contact.

17. Baltimore Orioles: Matt Shaw, SS, Maryland

Mike Elias and the Orioles just keep taking hitters throughout drafts and Shaw is excellent value at this juncture. The infielder is one of the best hitters in the college class and was outstanding in the Cape Cod League.

28. Houston Astros

Matt Shaw, INF, Maryland

Shaw can play anywhere on the diamond, and that’s a selling point for the Astros, but it’s his bat that gets the headlines. Shaw was a standout on the Cape in 2022 and features considerable raw power. He’s a pure hitter too featuring a mature approach and a willingness to use all-fields. The Astros have Jose Altuve beginning to age out, and Alex Bregman’s contract will come up soon. Shaw represents a fantastic next-man-up.

16. San Francisco Giants | Matt Shaw, 2B/3B, Maryland

Shaw offers value in a number of ways, even if he might not play shortstop long term. He hit 22 bombs for Maryland in 2022 with a .986 OPS, and then actually improved that mark to 1.006 en route to being named the top prospect in the Cape Cod League. The hitting tools are obvious, as he does a good job of retaining high-level contact skill while getting to his power, rather than selling out for it, and he’s shown the versatility to handle more of a 2B/3B defensive assignment. -BS

16 Matt Shaw SS/2B Maryland Big Ten

11-19-22 - 2023 MLB Draft: an early look at the Big Ten

http://dugoutedgebaseball.blogspot.com/2022/11/2023-mlb-draft-early-look-at-big-ten.html?m=1&s=03

1. SS Matt Shaw, Maryland.

Bat: R. Throw: R. 5'11", 185 lbs. Born 11/6/2001. Hometown: Brimfield, MA.

2022: 22 HR, .290/.381/.604, 12 SB, 46/34 K/BB in 60 games.

Matt Shaw has done nothing but hit since arriving in College Park. He slashed .332/.408/.543 as a freshman then more than tripled his home run output to 22 as a sophomore, good for second in the conference behind only his teammate Chris Alleyne's 24. After that, he further boosted his stock in the Cape Cod League, where he slashed .348/.434/.571 with six home runs in 44 games, planting himself firmly in first round consideration. Shaw lacks a carrying tool, but he can impact the game in a wide variety of ways. Hitting from a closed off stance much like Giancarlo Stanton (except that he's seven inches shorter), he's very good at getting his arms extended and using the whole field, showing above average power to all fields. He takes good at bats and has run just a 16.2% strikeout rate during his career at Maryland, then despite an elevated 22.2% rate on the Cape, he was able to work around that and do plenty of damage against the best arms in the country. An above average runner as well, he's aggressive on the basepaths and uses his speed well, which should also give him a shot to stick at shortstop going forward so long as he doesn't slow down with age. Standing just 5'11", he's not going to wow you with long home runs, highlight reel plays, or .400+ on-base percentages, but he'll get the job done on both sides of the ball, using the whole field as a hitter and showing some versatility with the glove. At peak, he could hit 15-20 home runs a year with solid on-base percentages while potentially holding down an everyday shortstop role, making for a Dansby Swanson-like profile if the glove holds up.

18. Matt Shaw, INF, Maryland – The Cape Cod League leader in all three slash lines on his way to being named the league’s MVP, Shaw is an offensive gem. He has plenty of power and makes a ton of contact with a well polished approach at the plate. He has seen time at short in college, but his range, build, and hands seem unlikely to stay there with the most likely destination being third base. That said, his baseball IQ and grittiness on the diamond could keep the door open on him sticking in the middle of the diamond.

He's a big, strong, thick middle-infielder who could certainly stick at shortstop, though some believe he could end up at second base or third base because of his shorter strides, inconsistent hands and muscular frame. 10-18-22 - https://baseballprospectjournal.com/matt-shaw-prioritizing-development-team/ -

Matt Shaw is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound shortstop with a well-balanced toolset. The right-handed hitter has simple mechanics and a short swing that allows him to drive the ball into the gaps.

He hits for average and power and shows solid plate discipline. Besides his ability at the plate, Shaw possesses plenty of speed and projects to steal double-digit bases in pro ball.

13. Matt Shaw, SS, Maryland

Shaw slammed 22 homers during the spring and then topped the Cape Cod League in hitting (.360), on-base percentage (.432), slugging (.574), OPS (1.006) and extra-base hits (17) en route to the summer circuit's MVP award. Scouts love his power and non-stop motor, but he lacks quickness and range at shortstop and likely will wind up at second or third base in pro ball.

Shaw does a little bit of everything well. He's a big, strong, thick middle-infielder who could certainly stick at shortstop, though some believe he could end up at second base or third base because of his shorter strides and muscular frame. Shaw was a force in the Big 10 as a true freshman and figures to anchor the middle of the Maryland lineup for the next two years. He's got the potential to net double digit homers and stolen bases at his collegiate peak whilst developing into a Kike Hernandez type pro.
