Nimmala has benefited from the early start to the high school season in Florida and all of the scouts and execs who are in the state anyway for spring training, and after adding some muscle this winter he’s showing 70 power along with the same easy swing and feel to hit he’d shown before. He’s a shortstop now with a 60 arm but is a fringe-average runner and might end up at third base.

Long, lean and explosive describe Nimmala well. He started tapping into big power on the showcase circuit but still remains super projectable and likely to add plenty more strength. Right now, it's more power-over-hit, but scouts think the hit tool could be average too. There's potential here to be an athletic impact bat on the left side of the infield, likely at third base at the next level. Nimmala will be just 17 years old at the time of the draft and offers some of the most intriguing athlete upside at the top of the class.

One of the fast risers up the prospect list over the past year, Nimmala is also one of the youngest players in the class as he will not turn 18 until next fall. Perfect Game has Nimmala rated as the No. 1 player in Florida and the top shortstop in the Class of 2023 thanks to quick hands and a plus power stroke. Could go late in the first round or early in the supplemental round.

Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest HS (FL) – Smooth actions, gliding feet, and plenty of arm, Nimmala will stick on the left side of the infield, although third vs. short is still up in the air as there is plenty of room for Nimmala to fill out. The power is real as he showed of at the PG National Showcase with a 420 ft HR that had an exit velocity of 105 MPH in batting practice, and he hasn’t even begun to fill out yet. The contact definitely lags behind the power as he does get long with the swing to sell out for that big power. The visual of the swing and finish reminds me a lot of Mookie Betts (not a comp, just a visual reference).

29. Seattle Mariners (Julio Rodriguez ROY Compensation): Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest HS (FL)

The Florida State commit is one of the youngest players in the draft class. He’s a middle infielder with offensive upside. Seattle receives this pick for Julio Rodriguez winning Rookie of the Year and the Mariners will select at No. 30 as well.

19. Tampa Bay Rays: Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest HS (FL)

Nimmala is a young player. He will only be 17-years-old on draft day. Any team drafting him will have to wait a while to see him in the bigs. Nevertheless, his tools pop on video. His smooth, fluid swing makes the ball blast off his bat at obscene exit velos. This summer will be a big test for him.

The Orioles are an analytically-motivated, model-driven bunch. Nimmala really jumps off the page for a number of reasons. He’ll be just 17 years old on draft day. He boasts some of the most obscene exit velocities in the class. His swing plane is fully-optimized. Combine all this with the high likelihood he’ll stick at the shortstop position and this could be a real steal at pick no. 17 if you believe the hit tool is good enough to buoy the other tools.

In searching this class for impact, premium position value, Nimmala jumps into a short list of prospects. A wiry, 6-foot-1, 170-pounder who still shows signs of adding considerable strength, Nimmala’s quick hands and loose wrists produce eye-opening power outputs thanks to the ease of movement with which he needs to get through impact while working on an uphill plane. Perhaps equally as enticing for the scouting community, Nimmala is a natural at shortstop with fluid actions that allow him to slow the game down at an advanced level while making each play look easy and sending accurate throws across the diamond from all angels. The Florida State recruit will not turn 18 until well after the draft which should only help in driving up his value in the first round.

5. Texas Rangers | Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest HS (Fla.) 

This is where things get interesting, as Nimmala is the second prep bat off the board and leaps into top-5 territory. The immense offensive ceiling and tools with future plus power potential in game is hard to pass up. He’s coming off an impressive summer and has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order power bat while sticking at short or at the least staying on the left side of the dirt. The fit in Texas would be awfully intriguing, as the Rangers go the high school route with a pair of highly-touted infielders manning the middle for the foreseeable future. -IB

There isn’t a player that definitively has the look and style of a Rockies pick here, but they appreciate bat speed, impact and athleticism, something Nimmala has in spades. Nimmala’s athletic testing and in-game performances this summer have really opened eyes. He’s a lanky infielder who could grow off the shortstop position, but it might not matter if he’s the impact bat some now project. Nimmala has super quick hands and a strong arm, with athletic actions on the dirt. He could end up at any infield position or in the outfield. He’ll be just 17 at the time of the draft, so models love him.
