3-3-23 - Keith Law’s MLB Draft 2023 Rankings: -
#11 Enrique Bradfield, Jr., OF, Vanderbilt
Bradfield’s an 80 runner and plus defender in center, but the hit tool and potential impact have always been something of a question, so his slow start this year hasn’t helped matters — his last extra-base hit came on June 5, as he has none this year and had none on the Cape last summer. He’s still a clear first-rounder but there’s going to be more scrutiny on his bat this spring.

Enrique Bradfield, Jr, CF, Vanderbilt– The highest-ranked 2023 draft prospect in the Showdown did not disappoint, despite a 1-for-11, one stolen base performance. At 6-foot-1, 165 pounds, Bradfield can be the most electrifying player in college baseball with his 80-grade impact speed and quickness. In addition to his always stellar defense, EBJ showed some improvement in the area of my greatest concern; soft contact on rollovers to the right side. Over the past two seasons he has tended to get out front and roll over too many pitches for easy 4-3 groundouts. Walking into Globe Life I wanted to see him consistently hit the ball up the middle or to the opposite field with some authority. And he did just that in the first two games against TCU and Oklahoma State, barreling balls up the middle and using the whole field. However, during Sunday’s third game vs Texas his barrel was out front in two of his four at-bats. Tool-wise he has good hand/eye and knows the strike zone, but one large question remains; just how much power will play in the game, especially with a wood stick in his hands. His bat speed is average and his strength is a work-in-progress. However, there are no questions about his legs impacting the game on the bases or his play in the big field. Bradfield also has top of the scale range and instincts. He’s a super-elite defender, think Devon White or Andruw Jones. If the ball comes down in the field of play, he’s there waiting for it. Overall, EBJ will need to evolve into a more complete player in the power department if his name is to be called in the top half of the first round next July. Comparables include former Major Leaguers Willie Wilson, Willie McGee and the most often mentioned in the scouting industry; Kenny Lofton.

7. Enrique Bradfield
Centerfield, Vanderbilt
If Enrique Bradfield isn't the fastest player in the country, he's in the conversation. Bradfield will never been a thumper, but he's got elite vision at the plate, hardly ever expands the zone and walks just about as much as he strikes out. His frame still has room to add some muscle, so it wouldn't surprise scouts if he ended up with enough juice to run into double-digit homers at his pro peak. He’s a guy who knows how to get on base and is a nightmare for the opposition when he runs. In the field, he's comfortably a plus defender in center. We're betting on his dynamic glove, speed, and gamebreaking ability. He's a Kenny Lofton type of spark-plug that provides far more value than his slugging percentage will ever indicate.

In J.J. Picollo’s first draft, he takes one of the safer players in the first round that projects for elite speed and defense in center field. Bradfield has an old school game but he’s improving his power.

6. Oakland Athletics: Enrique Bradfield, outfielder, Vanderbilt
Syndication: Tuscaloosa News
Gary Cosby Jr. / USA TODAY NETWORK
The Oakland Athletics need to fin on the margins because of their payroll and that means overlooking players who might have a flaw. Vanderbilt outfielder Enrique Bradfield only hit nine home runs in his first 497 ABs in college, but he stole 93 bases and delivered a stellar .327/.433/.456 slash line. A dangerous on-base threat with elite speed and excellent defense in center, he fits the A’s model and could climb the minor leagues at an accelerated rate.

4. Texas Rangers: Enrique Bradfield Jr., OF, Vanderbilt
Maybe one of the fastest players in the past ten drafts, Bradfield is a burner on the field and on the bases. He maintains an 80-grade speed since his high school days. He’s not a power guy, instead, more of your classic lead off guy. But you can put him at the top or bottom of the lineup and expect results. If he improves his strength in the offseason and show more power, we could be talking about a top-three guy here.

OF Enrique Bradfield Jr.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. is one of the most athletic prospects in the 2023 MLB Draft class. Bradfield is a Hialeah native with elite speed, excellent bat-to-ball skills, and a Gold Glove-caliber defense in the center field. He also draws comparisons to former Marlin Juan Pierre.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. is a 6’1”, 160-pound center fielder for the Vanderbilt Commodores. Bradfield has been a starter for the Commodores since he arrived on campus. He is the best base-stealer in the country and gets on base at a high rate. During his time at Vanderbilt, Bradfield has a .327/.433/.456 career slash line with 159 hits, eighteen doubles, nine triples, nine home runs, and swiped 93 bases in two seasons.
On FanGraphs, Enrique Bradfield Jr. is the seventh-ranked prospect in the 2023 MLB Draft. He’d address a need for Miami since the club currently does not have a true center fielder on the roster.

10. Miami Marlins
Enrique Bradfield, Outfield, Vanderbilt
The Marlins have seemingly rotated a million different names in and out of centerfield at loanDepot park over the past three seasons, a trend that needs to change. Bradfield brings a plus hit tool and 80-grade, elite speed that can be a difference maker, a dynamic tool all over the field. Bradfield brings athletic impact to the Marlins organization not seen since Dee Gordon, tacked onto game-changing defense in centerfield. He may never hit double-digit homers, but neither did Kenny Lofton. The Marlins could use some contact skills at the top of their lineup and Bradfield has a chance to be the first draftee to see the big leagues, potentially as early as late-2024.

6. Chicago Cubs | Enrique Bradfield Jr., OF, Vanderbilt
Bradfield Jr. brings a dynamic skill set that is not seen very often. He is the best defensive outfielder in the class thanks to his elite speed and athleticism. There is plenty of value on the offensive end as well, where his legs create runs on the bases by themselves and the power continues to develop. It is one of the higher ceiling profiles in the class, where the defense and speed will immediately make an impact. -TH

Enrique Bradfield Jr. highlights the Vandy outfield, and he is the fastest player in college baseball. His coverage in center field is borderline ridiculous and any ball in the air feels catchable. Bradfield’s baserunning is appointment viewing and the numbers back that up: 93 for 99 in career stolen base attempts, including a perfect 46 for 46 in 2022. The lefthanded hitter’s power does not gather headlines but he did slug .498 a season ago. Bradfield is a big-time star, and he has first-round pick written all over him.

6. Enrique Bradfield, OF, Vanderbilt – Speed, speed, speed, and speed. Those are the primary tools that make Bradfield so special, but he is more than that. Yes, he was 46-46 in steals last season but he is also a no-brainer center fielder and can hit too. He is a guy who knows his game, so he will work a count and draw the walk when he can, but he has a good swing and even showed a little power in 2022. The two tools he lacks is the power that will always be below average even as he does add more strength, and his arm as it is barely average even for center. But, did I mention that speed?

6. Enrique Bradfield, OF, Vanderbilt
Bradfield was the fastest player in the 2020 Draft as a high schooler and retains that title in 2023 after showing top-of-the-scale speed while stealing 93 bases in 99 attempts in his first two seasons at Vanderbilt, including a perfect 46-for-46 last year. A no-doubt center fielder and career .327/.433/.456 hitter, he's more on-base machine than power threat, though he did sock eight homers last spring after going deep just once as a freshman.

7. Cubs: Enrique Bradfield, OF, Vanderbilt
Bradfield’s 80-grade speed has been well-known by scouts since his high school days, though there were questions about his lack of strength and ability to impact the ball. He’s never going to be known for power, though he did homer eight times in 2022. That might not matter given that he went 46-for-46 in stolen base attempts in 2022 and has 93 steals in two seasons at Vandy.

Enrique Bradfield Jr., OF, Vanderbilt
Bradfield possesses elite speed and projects as a quality top-of-the-order hitter in the pro ranks. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitter has a contact-oriented approach with a strong understanding of the strike zone and a proven ability to create disruption on the bases.
He is a well-regarded defensive center fielder who will remain at the position in pro ball. He runs quality routes and covers a lot of ground due to his speed.
